Cobalt-based alloys are hard alloys resistant to various wear, corrosion and high-temperature oxidation. They are commonly known as cobalt-chromium-tungsten (molybdenum) alloys or Stellite alloys, which were invented by American Elwood Hayness in 1907.

      Cobalt-based alloys take cobalt as the main component, containing substantial nickel, chromium, tungsten and small amounts of molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, titanium, lanthanum and other alloying elements, and iron may also be present occasionally. Depending on chemical compositions, these alloys can be processed into welding wires and powders for hardfacing, thermal spraying, spray welding and other processes. They can also be manufactured into castings, forgings and powder metallurgy products.
